Top 500 global corporations have recognized meditation as a recommended practice because it can improve work performance, interpersonal relationships, Team Bonding and health. In an average 9-to-5 work day, just 5-15 minutes of deep breathing, Joint movements and tension release can work to decrease stress levels and increase overall productivity. The Harvard Business School along with INSEAD(Europe’s leading business school) have concluded from their research that the two most effective business tools for twenty-first century executives are meditation and intuition.
After conducting corporate sessions and interacting with them over the past 1 year and from my own practice over the last 15 years, I have realised even few days a month of meditation sessions have produced significant benefits. I am now working towards spreading meditation and its benefits for everyone. The below are the major benefits
Practicing meditation has shown repeatedly to improve our ability to sustain attention and decrease external and internal distractions. Researchers from Harvard Medical School found that a meditation program led to changes in brain regions involving learning and working memory capacity. It also helps to divide our tasks into subtasks and focus on the current task at hand rather than every task which needs to be completed.
This is important as working memory is crucial for reasoning and guiding our decisions and behavior, especially in the work-place. In fact, those who worked in high-stress work environments and practiced meditation could stay on a task longer, managed their time better, and received positive feedback after a task performance.
meditation practice can lead to improvements in problem-solving creative solutions as well as promote divergent thinking. The more a person continues to practice meditation regularly, the more open they are to bold and creative ideas. The more a person explores meditation, he tries to question the real and virtual worlds. This enhances the dimensions of analysis and views a problem from different perspective which enhances creativity.
The consistent practice of meditation can also have a notable beneficial impact on our overall mood, including reducing severe depression and anxiety by reduction in blood pressure. Various studies have shown that meditation-based programs lead to significant reductions in clinical levels of anxiety and depression across a range of conditions and an increase in patience and positivity. A daily practice can help to carry this optimism into the workplace and boost work satisfaction.
Stress Free life
Stress has been linked to a wide range of medical problems, including anxiety, heart disease, hypertension, and depression. A study done at Stanford University School of Medicine shows that those who practice mindfulness meditation display a reduction in stress-related symptoms, and report increases in their sense of control in their lives. For instance, meditation can produce a 30% reduction in symptoms of stress among those with a serious illness.
Strengthen Your Professional Relationships
Regular meditation practice has a positive impact on yourself and those around you. Increased self-awareness leads to significant improvements in work relationships and friendships, due to communication and expression of emotions. Relationships become easier and natural due to increased emotional intelligence. In fact, people who meditate tend to show more acceptance towards each other and can create more positive and holistic work environments.
Finally what CEO would like to hear, the practice of meditation will help to improve the general productivity in companies of any size or industry due to less sick leaves and motivated employees. By helping employees at all levels deal with their stress effectively, providing focus on their own goals and the goals of the company and increasing communication, the productivity of the employee will improve. And when productivity improves at the individual level, overall productivity of the company improves, which leads to increased profits and a healthier bottom line.
That’s not all, these are some of the benefits of mediation. Others include benefits like reduced BP, healthy heart, blood purification, positive energy, balanced mind, reduced unnecessary thoughts etc. Also Meditation is the end result after yoga to achieve moksha as mentioned in Astanga Yoga by Sage Patanjali.
